The company announced plans on Friday to invest an additional $250 million in India over the next three to four years, signaling a strategic pivot that pushes its operations far beyond traditional gaming and into artificial intelligence, robotics, and deep technology sectors.

This latest financial commitment brings Krafton’s total planned direct investment in India to more than $500 million. That figure encompasses the initial $250 million the publisher has already deployed across the country since 2021. Furthermore, this fresh capital allocation operates entirely independently of Krafton’s participation in a broader $670 million India-focused growth fund, which the company unveiled in December 2025 alongside South Korean internet giant Naver and prominent financial investor Mirae Asset. At the time of that fund’s announcement, Krafton committed to contributing approximately $137 million at its first close.

For Krafton, India has evolved into an indispensable cornerstone of its global strategy. The country offers unprecedented scale, boasting more than a billion internet subscribers and an active base of over 700 million smartphone users. Krafton initially laid the foundation for its Indian enterprise on the back of its blockbuster battle royale titles, spearheaded by BGMI—a heavily localized iteration of PUBG tailored specifically for the Indian audience, which has successfully amassed over 260 million downloads. Over recent years, however, the publisher has actively utilized strategic startup investments to diversify its portfolio, expanding its footprint into content platforms, esports, and digital media.

Navigating Regulatory Shifts in a Crucial Market

Krafton’s operational journey in India, however, has not been without significant turbulence. The company’s path was severely disrupted in 2020 when the Indian government enacted a sweeping ban on PUBG Mobile alongside hundreds of other applications with perceived Chinese ties, acting amid escalating geopolitical tensions between New Delhi and Beijing. Refusing to abandon its lucrative user base, Krafton swiftly reorganized its corporate strategy. In 2021, the company introduced BGMI as a fresh, compliant alternative. To appease regulatory scrutiny and satisfy New Delhi’s data security requirements, Krafton dropped Tencent Games as the regional publisher and migrated all Indian user data and game servers to Microsoft’s Azure cloud infrastructure.

Despite these careful structural adjustments, regulatory headwinds resurfaced unexpectedly in July 2022 when BGMI was abruptly banned from major app marketplaces like the Google Play Store. The suspension kept the game sidelined for nearly a year until the federal government permitted Krafton to resume operations under a strict three-month trial basis in May 2023. Having successfully navigated that probationary phase, Krafton has continued to double down on the franchise, with ambitious plans to roll out BGMI Lite in India by the conclusion of 2026.

Backing Local Startups and Fostering Ecosystem Talent

Even during periods of intense regulatory uncertainty, Krafton maintained a steady stream of venture investments in the Indian startup ecosystem. To date, the gaming giant has backed roughly 18 companies within the country, including four to five dedicated gaming studios. Its diverse portfolio features prominent domestic digital brands such as Nodwin Gaming, streaming platform Loco, storytelling platform Pratilipi, audio content app Kuku FM, and influencer marketing platform One Impression, among others.

The announcement of the new $250 million investment follows a high-level meeting in New Delhi earlier on Friday, where Krafton Chairman Chang Byung-gyu met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the company, the two leaders discussed broader strategic opportunities for fostering closer bilateral cooperation between India and South Korea across the gaming industry, advanced technology sectors, and other emerging digital domains.

Alongside financial investments, Krafton has steadily fortified its operational presence on the ground. Last year, the publisher completed the acquisition of a controlling stake in Pune-based gaming studio Nautilus Mobile, the creative force behind the popular Real Cricket franchise, for approximately $14 million. In tandem with corporate acquisitions, Krafton is actively investing in human capital through initiatives like the KIGI Academy, an industry-academia partnership program designed to train and cultivate the next generation of domestic talent in game development, digital creation, and interactive entertainment.

Krafton, the South Korean gaming heavyweight behind global phenomena like PUBG and Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), is significantly scaling up its long-term bet on the world’s most populous nation.
