YouTube has announced a sweeping array of new features aimed at reshaping both the viewer and creator experience across its vast ecosystem. Revealed during the annual Made on YouTube event, the upcoming updates span nearly every corner of the platform, introducing conversational customization, enhanced artificial intelligence integrations, social messaging expansions, and structured content formats for Shorts.

The platform, which continues to dominate global video consumption across mobile devices, web browsers, and living room televisions, is leaning heavily into generative AI and community-driven features. These updates are designed to give users more granular control over what they watch, how they interact with content, and how creators manage their growing digital enterprises.

YouTube App

Among the most significant updates coming to the core YouTube application is the introduction of Custom Feeds. This capability allows users to conversationally create dedicated tabs right from their homepage, tailoring the interface to specific moods, daily routines, or newly discovered interests. Rather than relying entirely on standard algorithmic recommendations, users can prompt the platform to generate multiple distinct feeds tailored to specialized viewing habits. Examples provided by the company include creating an evening wind-down tab dedicated solely to long-form documentaries or a separate feed for tracking content from emerging DIY creators. This feature is scheduled to roll out to users in the United States across web, mobile, and television interfaces soon.

The platform is also expanding the capabilities of its Ask YouTube feature, introducing built-in shopping integrations designed to streamline product research. When users encounter content featuring commercial products, Ask YouTube can now generate organized video recommendations, including detailed comparison tables that outline product attributes and categories based on individual viewing preferences. Furthermore, once a user selects a video that catches their interest, they can continue asking contextual questions about the product directly on the video’s watch page, bridging the gap between passive video consumption and active consumer research.

Social interaction within the YouTube app is also receiving a notable refresh. Starting this fall, comments will officially support GIFs. Viewers will be able to search through an integrated library of moving images directly within the mobile comment box, bringing a more expressive medium of communication to both standard videos and YouTube Shorts.

In addition to GIF comments, YouTube is expanding its in-app direct messaging system to support group chats. This long-awaited social feature will roll out this fall in several regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Brazil, and select European countries, making it easier for friends to share and discuss videos within a centralized chat environment.

YouTube Music + Podcasts

On the audio front, YouTube Music is introducing a personalized AI-audio guide titled "Your podcast lineup." Designed to function as a weekly spoken preview of recommended shows, the feature guides listeners through curated suggestions while explaining the reasoning behind each recommendation. It then seamlessly transitions into suggested episodes, offering what the company describes as a completely eyes-optional and hands-free listening experience.

Simultaneously, the Ask Music chat feature located within the Home tab is gaining expanded capabilities. Subscribers will soon be able to use the chat interface to customize their playback queues dynamically or dive deeper into artist lore and background information. Both of these audio-focused updates are slated to arrive soon for YouTube Music and Premium subscribers worldwide.

Beyond software updates, YouTube announced a major live-streaming milestone, confirming that it will continue to stream the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival through 2030. The upcoming 2027 edition will mark 15 consecutive years of bringing the iconic desert festival experience to digital fans across the globe.

YouTube Shorts

YouTube Shorts is receiving a structural update with the introduction of the Shorts series feature. This new tool allows creators to organize their short-form vertical videos into distinct seasons and episodes, providing a more structured and episodic viewing experience for audiences who follow narrative or serialized content. The rollout for this feature begins immediately.

Additionally, the Shorts feed is expanding to incorporate text-based posts. Google noted that more than 300 million users actively engage with Posts on YouTube every day, and integrating these text updates into the Shorts ecosystem aims to bridge community updates with vertical video discovery. These community posts are also scheduled to expand to television screens in the coming months, bringing creator community updates to the living room experience.

For YouTube Creators

Content creators are also receiving powerful new tools designed to streamline production and channel management. In early 2027, YouTube will pilot a Live auto-dubbing feature. This tool is engineered to automatically translate a creator’s speech in real-time, allowing international audiences to listen along in their preferred language as the broadcast happens.

To help creators manage engagement, YouTube is testing opt-in AI-powered comment moderation. The system is designed to learn a creator’s unique moderation style and specific channel needs over time, helping to filter out unwanted noise while allowing creators to focus on community building and content production.
