Vaca, who spent four years with the company, confirmed his departure via social media following the latest wave of layoffs across Xbox studios. The timing of the personnel cut has drawn significant attention within the gaming community, coming just days after Vaca and the rest of the team at The Coalition celebrated the game officially going gold. Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled to enter early access next week, giving players a chance to jump in just five days ahead of its global release.

The abrupt departure of a core narrative leader so close to launch casts a shadow of uncertainty over the project’s final rollout and the studio’s future. While Microsoft has not yet outlined its long-term plans for The Coalition once Gears of War: E-Day is out in the wild, parting ways with key creative talent at such a critical juncture does little to inspire confidence among players and industry observers regarding the studio’s stability or its leadership pipeline.

Gears of War: E-Day's Story Director Gets Unceremoniously Laid Off Just Days Ahead of Game's Release

The situation at The Coalition is part of a broader, systemic restructuring initiative by Microsoft that has impacted multiple marquee franchises and internal teams. In a similarly jarring sequence of events, Halo Studios cinematic director Josh Daniels was laid off just one day after receiving a promotion, highlighting the rapid and sometimes unpredictable nature of the sweeping corporate changes.

However, the trajectory for Halo Studios appears distinct from that of Gears of War. While Halo’s internal structure is being significantly reduced—leaving behind only a small support team to maintain existing entries in the franchise—Microsoft has handed over the future reins of the Halo series to Activision, which will build a new team dedicated to developing the next mainline installment.

In contrast, the long-term roadmap for the Gears of War franchise remains considerably less clear under Microsoft’s current vision. When Gears of War: E-Day was initially announced, it was framed as a prequel that would explore the brutal origins of the Locust War on Emergence Day. At the time, representatives for the studio and publisher suggested that the team would eventually return to the ongoing storyline that was left hanging at the dramatic conclusion of Gears 5. Yet, with widespread restructuring, leadership changes, and talent departures sweeping through Xbox studios, it remains entirely unclear whether those narrative threads are still part of Microsoft’s future plans for the series.
