Valve has officially opened pre-orders for the Steam Frame, its long-awaited standalone virtual reality headset, finally shedding light on pricing information, official accessories, and the official release timeline for the highly anticipated device.

The launch marks a major milestone for Valve as the company steps firmly into the standalone VR market. For years, PC-based virtual reality enthusiasts relied heavily on wired systems like the Valve Index or looked to competitors for wireless mobile solutions. The Steam Frame aims to bridge that gap by combining standalone untethered computing power with the expansive ecosystem of the Steam platform, giving players an entirely new way to experience their favorite titles without being tethered to a desktop computer.

To manage high demand and prevent scalpers from hijacking the initial rollout, Valve announced it is utilizing a randomized reservation lottery system rather than a traditional first-come, first-served model. The company previously used a similar approach during the rollout of the Steam Machine hardware, finding success in fair distribution.

Prospective buyers do not need to rush to beat a virtual clock, but they do need to act within a specific window. Customers must sign up for their desired model through the official Steam store page between now and September 17th at 10 AM PT. Participating in this window ensures they will secure a spot to be considered for the very first batch of hardware.

Based on the results of that randomization process, customers will receive a notification email later on September 17th. These emails will indicate whether the user has successfully secured a spot on the reservation list or if they have been placed on the waitlist.

Being placed on the waitlist means that an individual’s place in line is currently beyond the total number of Steam Frames available in the initial production batch. However, Valve has assured users that it will automatically notify participants if and when inventory frees up and they are successfully moved into the active reservation queue.

For those fortunate enough to secure a spot in the primary queue, Valve expects to send out the first wave of formal purchase emails beginning on September 18th. This rapid turnaround means that the earliest wave of standalone headsets should begin arriving at customers’ doorsteps shortly thereafter.

Alongside the headset itself, Valve also pulled back the curtain on a lineup of first-party accessories designed specifically for the Steam Frame, which will be made available at launch to enhance comfort, battery life, and overall usability.

For those who might be catching up on the hardware specifications, the Steam Frame is a powerhouse of a standalone VR headset. Under the hood, it packs a high-performance Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 mobile chipset. This powerful mobile processor allows the device to natively run VR games that have been specifically optimized for the mobile architecture, while also opening the door to run nearly the entire Steam library of traditional flatscreen games in a virtual environment.

In addition to its standalone processing capabilities, the Steam Frame doubles as a flexible wireless streaming device. It features the ability to stream virtually any content or game directly from a personal computer via an included Wi-Fi 6E dongle, ensuring that high-end PC VR experiences remain accessible without the hassle of heavy physical cables.

As the hardware launch approaches, excitement continues to build around how the Steam Frame will stack up against existing market competitors and how developers will adapt their libraries for Valve’s new hardware ecosystem.
